Skirt-A-Thon
Saturday, June 10, 2023 - Saturday, June 10, 2023
Open to KAA Members ($45) and non-members ($55)
The Skirt-A-Thon for Milling-Skirting class scheduled for June 10, 2023. It will be held at Pendleton County Cooperative Extension Service in Falmouth, KY. It will start at 9:00 AM EST and go until approximately 3:00 PM. You are welcome to stay and skirt as long or as short a time as you want!
The goal of the class is to teach you how to skirt your alpaca fiber for the mill. After some instruction, you will begin to skirt some of your own fleeces. If you have a skirting table, please bring it. If you don't, we will have instructions for an easy and inexpensive option. There will be a spot on your registration to note that you need the instructions.
Refreshments will be provided (coffee, water, snacks). You can bring a bag lunch or we have compiled a list of nearby dining options. We also have lodging options if you would like to arrive the night before. See attachment for dining and lodging options.
The cost of the class is $45.00 for KY Alpaca Assoc. members and $55.00 for non-members. Registration and payment must be received by June 4, 2023 to reserve your spot.
You may pay for the class in the KAA store or mail a check to Steve Ross at 920 Galloway Rd, Stamping Ground, KY 40379.
Instructor Bio: Char and Rick Johnson have owned Happy Tails Alpacas since 2006. Char has always been active in the alpaca industry as a volunteer at numerous halter and fleece shows, serving on affiliate committees and is a past president of the Carolina Alpaca Association. She has also served as a member of the Alpaca Owners Assoc. (AOA) Board and currently serves on the AOA Judges Training & Certification Committee (JTCC).
Char has her BME from Florida State University (Piano /woodwinds) and has always had a creative spirit. She enjoys many crafts and working with fiber including spinning, dying, felting and weaving. Early on she noticed that very few alpaca owners did anything with the fleece. She had her mentor (retired AOA Judge Kathy Klay) teach her how to skirt fleece. Char purchased Fleeces To Go in 2016. She also teaches “No Fear Fleece Skirting” seminars in an effort to get the fiber off the farms and into production.
